90 Days Australia and New Zealand

Cheapest travel insurance for over 70s visiting family in Australia for 3 months

Planning a three-month trip to Australia to catch up with children and grandchildren is the highlight of many retirees' calendars. However, for UK citizens over 70, a 90-day stay poses a unique insurance challenge; standard "off-the-shelf" policies often cap single-trip durations at 31 or 45 days, and the costs for worldwide cover can escalate quickly. Finding the cheapest travel insurance for over 70s visiting family in Australia isn’t just about the lowest premium—it’s about securing a "Long Stay" policy that bridges the gap between the UK’s Reciprocal Health Care Agreement and the high costs of private Australian specialist care.

While the UK and Australia share a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) that covers "medically necessary" treatment, relying on it for a three-month family visit is a significant financial risk. The RHCA won’t cover the £20,000+ cost of medical repatriation or the theft of expensive hearing aids and mobility devices during your stay. To find the cheapest travel insurance for over 70s visiting family in Australia for 3 months, you need to look beyond the major comparison sites and target specialist providers who offer extended single-trip durations and "family-visit" vouchers, ensuring you’re protected for every BBQ and beach day without overpaying for unnecessary "adventure" add-ons.

Reciprocal Health Care Agreements

The Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) between the UK and Australia/New Zealand are incredibly valuable for travelers over 65, but they are often misunderstood as "full" health insurance. They are designed to act as a safety net for medically necessary treatment—meaning anything that cannot wait until you return home—but they do not cover everything.

1. The Australia-UK Agreement (Medicare)

In Australia, the RHCA allows UK residents to enroll in Medicare, the national public health system. This grants you access to free treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and subsidized "out-of-hospital" services (like GP visits) and prescription medicines via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). However, it is important to note that you must typically enroll at a Medicare service centre once you arrive to get your card. While it covers the basics, it explicitly excludes ambulance travel (which can cost thousands of dollars) and any treatment in private hospitals.

2. The New Zealand-UK Agreement

The agreement with New Zealand is slightly more streamlined but narrower in scope. British citizens on a temporary visit are eligible for urgent medical treatment on the same basis as New Zealanders. This includes most hospital services and some dental treatment for those under 19. A unique feature in New Zealand is the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC): if you are injured in an accident (like a fall while hiking), the ACC often covers your treatment costs regardless of who was at fault. Like the Australian agreement, however, it does not cover routine GP visits, non-urgent prescriptions, or the massive cost of flying you back to the UK if you are seriously ill.
